“The driver lost control of the bus as a result of over speeding and he ended up plunging the bus into the Owena River,” this was the eye witness account of of an accident that took place on Sunday, 18 April, 2021 on Ondo/Akure Road, Ondo, reports The Gazelle News.com.
The 18-seater bus on plunged into the Owena River with all its occupants.
“The bus was coming from Ondo town axis and headed towards Akure but was over speeding.
“Thank God! Five of the passengers including a child were rescued and taken to the hospital by combined efforts of other motorists, passers-by and men of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC),” the witness said.
He added that some of the passengers lost their lives at the scene of the accident.
Mr Ahmed Hassan, Ondo State Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Coprs (FRSC), confirmed the incident on Sunday, 18 April, 2021 in Akure.
Hassan, however, stated that the number of casualties had yet to be ascertained.
He added that men of the command were still at the scene of the accident.
“Yes, there is an accident where a bus plunged into the Owena River and our men are still at the scene for rescue, but we cannot ascertain the number of people that died or survived for now,” he said.
