The Nigerian football governing body, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on Tuesday, 1 September, 2026 announced  the Super Eagles’ first fixtures of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, scheduled for this month.

NFF, which announced this through a fixture graphic posted on the official Super Eagles X handle on Tuesday, said, Nigeria will begin their qualifying campaign against “Madagascar at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, on Wednesday, 23 September, 2026.”

After this, according to NFF, the team  will  jet out to Morocco to face “Guinea-Bissau in their second qualifying match on Sunday, September 27.”

According to the NFF,  the matches are part of the opening two matchdays of the 2027 AFCON qualifiers, with Nigeria drawn in Group L alongside Madagascar, Tanzania and Guinea-Bissau.

The 2027 Africa Cup of Nations will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania from June 19 to July 17, 2027.

After missing the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Super Eagles will be seeking to secure their place at the tournament through these matches

The qualifiers will be played on a home-and-away basis, with the teams in each group scheduled to play six matches.

According to the qualifying format, the top two teams in each group will qualify for the AFCON finals, except in Groups D, H and L, where the host countries are involved.

Tanzania, one of the three co-hosts, is in Nigeria’s Group L and has automatic qualification as a host.

Consequently, only the highest-ranked team other than Tanzania in Group L will qualify for the finals.
