The Super Eagles of Nigeria have successfully booked their spot in the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, following a thumping 4-0 victory over Mozambique in the round of 16.
The match kicked off with Ademola Lookman striking the first goal in the 20th minute, expertly curling a finish into the top corner from Akor Adams’ precise pass.
Shortly before halftime, Victor Osimhen doubled Nigeria’s lead, putting the team firmly in control of the match. Osimhen’s second goal came after the break, further solidifying Nigeria’s dominance. Akor Adams then sealed the win with a fourth goal, marking his first of the tournament.
This impressive victory not only secures Nigeria’s place in the quarter-finals but also sets them up for a potential showdown with either Algeria or DR Congo on Saturday, 10 January, 2026.
Notably, Nigeria becomes the first team in this year’s AFCON to score four goals in a single match, with a total of 12 goals scored so far in the tournament two more than Senegal, the next most prolific team.
Despite the convincing win, Nigeria’s defensive record remains a work in progress, with 11 teams conceding fewer goals than the Super Eagles in the tournament so far.
Meanwhile,Mozambique exits the competition with dignity, having put up a valiant effort.
The match also showcased Nigeria’s impressive squad depth, with substitutes Moses Simon, Samuel Chukwueze, Paul Onuachu, and Raphael Onyedika contributing to the team’s energy and momentum in the final stages of the match.
This dominant performance sends a strong message to the remaining contenders in thecompetition,signaling Nigeria’s intent to challenge for the AFCON title.
