Nigerian teenage tennis sensation, Seun Ogunsakin, has booked his place in the qualifying rounds of the 2026 Roland Garros Junior Championships, sealing a landmark breakthrough for Nigerian tennis on the global stage.

The 17-year-old Ekiti State-born player, currently Nigeria’s top-ranked junior and one of Africa’s fastest-rising prospects, was confirmed for the qualifying draw scheduled Thursday, 28 May, 2026, at the Stade Roland-Garros in Paris.
The development follows his steady ascent in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) junior rankings, driven by consistent international performances and his title triumph at the ITF J200 Africa Regional Championship in Cairo, Egypt, which significantly boosted his standing and secured his place in the Roland Garros pathway.

Ogunsakin’s qualification has been described as historic, as he becomes the first Nigerian in decades to feature in the Roland Garros junior event.
He also joins a select group of players of Nigeria-descent to have appeared at the French Open, including former professional Nduka Odizor and Michael Mmoh, further underlining the significance of his rise.
The left-handed youngster has continued to impress on clay, recording a 68 per cent win rate on the surface.
He has won 13 of his last 19 matches, a run that highlights his growing consistency and adaptability on the surface.
Ogunsakin’s inclusion in the qualifying draw followed his surge in the global junior rankings, describing it as another major milestone in his rapidly progressing career.
Looking ahead, Ogunsakin will compete in the qualifying rounds for a place in the main junior singles draw, scheduled for May 31 to June 7, 2026.
He is participating under the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Grand Slam Player Development Programme, with stakeholders expressing optimism about his chances of advancing.
The Roland Garros opportunity comes after a narrow miss at the Australian Open juniors, making the 2026 French Open his maiden Grand Slam appearance at junior level and a defining step in his emerging international career.
