The Ogun Government through the state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, on Tuesday, 16 September, 2025, raised an alarm over surge in the number of diphtheria cases reported across the state.
Nigeria has battled recurring outbreaks of diphtheria since May 2022, when cases were first confirmed in Kano and other northern states.
According to official data, the infection has killed more than 1,300 people nationwide as of May 2025, making it one of the country’s most persistent public health concerns.
Diphtheria, once thought to be largely eradicated through routine childhood immunisation, has re-emerged in communities with low vaccine coverage and poor access to healthcare.
The World Health Organisation and Nigeria’s Centre for Disease Control have repeatedly stressed the importance of vaccination and public awareness to break the chain of transmission, especially in vulnerable communities.
Coker, in a statement she signed on Tuesday, 16 September, 2025 explained that diphtheria is a bacterial infection that spreads easily from person to person through coughing, sneezing, or close contact.
The Commissioner, who noted that common symptoms include sore throat, difficulty in breathing or swallowing, fever, swollen neck, and a thick grey or white coating in the throat or nose, added that if not treated promptly, the disease can lead to severe complications and even death.
Coker urged members of the public to take preventive measures, stressing that vaccination remains the most effective protection.
“To protect yourself, your family, and the community, we advise the following: Ensure vaccination: Diphtheria is preventable. Parents are strongly encouraged to ensure that children receive all recommended routine immunisations. Adults who missed their vaccines should also get protected.
“Practice good hygiene: Wash hands regularly with soap and water, and cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
“Avoid close contact with sick persons: If you notice anyone with diphtheria-like symptoms, keep a safe distance and encourage them to seek medical care immediately.
“Seek early treatment: Anyone who develops symptoms should report immediately to the nearest health facility. Do not self-medicate.
“Stay informed: Follow only official updates from the State Ministry of Health and avoid spreading rumours,” she said.
Coker assured residents that the state government, in collaboration with development partners, is working hard to contain the outbreak, while appealing for the cooperation of all citizens to overcome the health challenge.
