Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege has expressed deep sympathy for the families of victims and indeed, the entire people and government of Lagos State over the tragic gas explosion in Abule Odo on Sunday 15th March, 2020.
He commended the Lagos State Government, National Emergency Management Authority, Federal Fire Service and others who promptly responded when the unfortunate incident occurred.
Lamenting the loss of many lives and homes, the Deputy President of the Senate described the late Principal of all-girls Bethlehem College, Rev. Sister Henrietta Alokha as a ‘shining light’ without whose rescue efforts, the burden of grief would have been much worse.
“Even in moments of tragedy and loss, God has a way of reminding us of the place of great virtues and true leadership; in the face of imminent danger, Reverend Sister Alokha conscientiously rescued school children under her care from the raging inferno but could not make it out safely.
“She lived and died with true greatness, moulding young lives and making such supreme sacrifice for their safety; no doubt, the Catholic Church, her family and her nation find cause to treasure the potent goodness of her earthly sojourn.
“This is a difficult time for many families and numerous Nigerians who vicariously bear this deep grief. As we pray for all those directly affected, we all have to learn the difficult lessons about the need for precautions on environmental, health and safety issues,” he stated.
