Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested five persons for allegedly killing and dumping the body of a fisherman named Segun Sikiru into a lagoon in Iwopin town of Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area of  the state.

The suspects, all members of the community, are: Saheed Mureni, Afeez Mureni, Saheed Taidi, Thompson Samuel, and Ogoji Olorunwa.

It was gathered that the deceased and his two sons left their home for fishing, but suddenly noticed suspicious activities at their fish trap.

The suspects who were discovered stealing from Sikiru’s fish trap allegedly struck the deceased with a bamboo stick, striking him in the chest, while the two sons managed to escape the assault.

The Ogun State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, who confirmed the arrest of the suspects on Tuesday, 2 October, 2024,  said the arrest was made by operatives of the Abigi Police Division on Sunday, 29, September, 2024 after a report from the family .

“When the deceased spotted them at his fish trap, he tried to raise the alarm and draw the attention of people in the area to what was happening.

“However, the suspects allegedly attacked him, striking him in the chest with a bamboo stick.

“Once they realised he had lost consciousness, they reportedly threw him into the lagoon,” she said

The state police image-maker Odutola added that his body had been recovered and taken to a mortuary in Ijebu-Ode and investigation was ongoing.
