Following the recent judgment by the Supreme Court which nullifies Local Government Council elections in Rivers State, the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has announced a new date for fresh polls.
The commission’s chairman, Adolphus Enebeli during a stakeholders’ meeting in Port Harcourt, the state capital on Wednesday, 5 March, 2025 said the LG elections would take place on 9 August, 2025.

Enebeli, who noted that the commission officials were present at the meeting to officially unveil the timetable and guidelines for the fresh local government elections in the state, urged political parties, their members and supporters to adhere to the rules of the election said RSEIC is committed to conducting a free, fair and credible poll in the state.
According to him, the announcement of a new date for the exercise follows the apex court’s judgment nullifying the previous election which was conducted in the state in 2024.

The court in its judgment on 28 February, 2025, held that the October 5, 2024, LG council polls in the state was null and void.
According to the Supreme Court’s judgment, the electoral commission failed for abide by the provisions of the Electoral Act in conducting the elections.
