Seven months after President Bola Tinubu declared a nationwide security emergency and ordered the recruitment of 50,000 new police officers to tackle worsening insecurity, the Police Service Commission has formally handed over the newly recruited constables to the Nigeria Police Force for training.
The handover took place on Thursday, 6 August,2026 and was presided over by the commission’s Commissioner I, retired Justice Paul Galumje, according to a statement issued the same day by the commission’s spokesperson, Torty Kalu.
The statement said the recruitment exercise was conducted in line with the directive of President Tinubu and relevant statutory provisions.
Galumje thanked the President for his support of the recruitment process and formally presented the successful candidates to the Nigeria Police Force for training at designated police colleges and other approved institutions, handing over the detailed list of successful candidates, contained in a flash drive, to police authorities.
Receiving the recruits on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, DIG Isyaku Mohammed, who oversees the Force Training and Development Department, commended the commission for conducting what he described as a transparent recruitment exercise.
He assured that training of the recruits would commence simultaneously across the country once funds for the exercise were released. “The training will commence nationwide as soon as funds are released,” Mohammed said.
Also speaking, the representative of the Ministry of Police Affairs, Director of Police Service Department, Ibrahim Muhammad, described the recruitment process as credible and transparent.
The Secretary to the PSC, Onyemuche Nnamani, attributed the successful completion of the exercise to collaboration among stakeholders, expressing satisfaction with the outcome and describing it as a reflection of effective teamwork by all parties involved.
Tinubu had declared the nationwide security emergency on November 26, 2025, ordering the recruitment of 50,000 new police officers as part of measures to tackle worsening insecurity across the country.
The Police Service Commission subsequently opened the application portal for the exercise on December 15, 2025, and later extended the closing date by two weeks to February 8, 2026, to give applicants more time. The exercise was concluded roughly seven months after it began.
The recruitment is expected to boost the manpower of the Nigeria Police Force as the new constables proceed for training ahead of deployment.
