The Benue State Government has confirmed the suspected outbreak of Lassa fever following the death of three people and 12 reported cases from the viral disease in the Okpokwu Local Government Area of the state

The state Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr Yanmar Ortese, made this disclosure in a telephone conversation with newsmen on Wednesday, 22 January, 2025.

According to  Ortese, the reported deaths and cases were still based on suspicions, just as he also added that the incident occurred last week in Okpokwu Local Government Area of the state.

“We have suspected cases of Lassa fever. Three people died with symptoms that depict Lassa fever. 12 samples from people who had close contact with them have been taken and until the result is out, it remains under suspicion. No confirmed cases yet.”

The commissioner added that the ministry has swung into action as it’s emergency operations unit has quarantined those suspected to be affected.
