Tinubu Tackling Nigeria’s 60-yr-old ‘Cancer’, Says NITDA DG

The Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, on Saturday, 31 October, 2026 stated that President Bola Tinubu is taking difficult but necessary steps to address Nigeria’s decades-old economic challenges, which he likened to ‘cancer’.

Inuwa said the economic reforms introduced by the Tinubu administration might be painful in the short term but were necessary to put the country on the path of sustainable development.

The DG NITDA stated this on Saturday, 31october, 2026 in Garin Gabas, Malam Madori Local Government Area of Jigawa State, during the commissioning of the Tinubu Must Stay Movement office donated by Dr Sulaiman Hashim.

The event also featured an empowerment programme for 310 women entrepreneurs.

Using cancer treatment as an analogy for the administration’s economic reforms, Inuwa argued that Nigeria needed fundamental changes rather than temporary relief to overcome problems that had hindered its development for more than six decades.

While attributing the country’s economic difficulties to years of corruption, embezzlement and misappropriation of public funds, arguing that the current administration’s policies were designed to address these challenges, NITDA chief urged Nigerians to remain patient, maintaining that the reforms were aimed at providing lasting solutions to the country’s economic problems.

Inuwa, who also serves as the national coordinator of the Tinubu Must Stay Movement, said the newly commissioned office would strengthen the group’s grassroots mobilisation efforts and expand its activities beyond social media and national-level engagement.

He also called for President Tinubu’s re-election in 2027, arguing that the administration needed more time to consolidate its development agenda and lay a solid foundation for national transformation.

The NITDA Director-General further criticised policies that encouraged economic dependence rather than production, insisting that  government interventions should prioritise productive activities.

Speaking at the event, the donor of the office, Dr Sulaiman Hashim, said his decision was driven by the importance of grassroots politics, stressing that political mobilisation must begin at the community level.

Hashim described the movement as a platform for political reorientation and mentorship, adding that the office would serve as a base for engaging residents and mobilising support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He also opposed any return to fuel consumption subsidies, arguing that government resources should instead be channelled towards supporting production and economic activities.

Some beneficiaries of the women’s empowerment programme expressed appreciation to the organisers and pledged their support for President Tinubu’s re-election bid.

The commissioning comes amid heightened political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections, with support groups increasingly establishing grassroots structures to mobilise backing for their preferred candidates.
