As the race for Lagos Island Federal Constituency I gathers pace, Prince Adetoyese Olusi’s bid for the House of Representatives is drawing strength from a documented record of road, drainage and public infrastructure projects executed across Lagos Island.

An overview of capital projects undertaken by the Lagos Island Local Government Department of Works and Infrastructure between January and December 2020 and 2021 shows a deliberate focus on road rehabilitation, flood control and the upgrade of critical public facilities within the Island.
In 2020, intervention efforts combined road construction with drainage improvements to address mobility and environmental challenges. Central to this was the rehabilitation and concrete pavement construction along Ojo-Giwa Street, from Binuyo Street to Aroloya Street, a key corridor within the Island.

At the same time, drainage projects were prioritised to tackle recurring flooding. These included rehabilitation works and the construction of reinforced box culverts at Olumegbon Street by Enu-Owa Street and Oju-Olokun Street by Enu-Owa Street.
In addition, reinforced box ramps were constructed at Idoluwo Street, Oroyinyin Street and Moshalashi Street along the Docemo axis, areas known for water accumulation.
Beyond roads and drainage, attention shifted to public infrastructure. The Office of the Executive Chairman was renovated, while Zenith Hospital on Adeniji Adele Road also underwent upgrades.
Similarly, the Council Hall and Council Chamber were refurbished, alongside the rehabilitation of burnt office spaces and the staff canteen building at the Local Government Secretariat, Zappass. Supervisors’ offices within the secretariat were equally upgraded to improve administrative efficiency.
Subsequently, in 2021, the scope of works expanded, with widespread road upgrades and rehabilitation across major streets on Lagos Island. Doherty Street and Davies Street were upgraded, while Ashogbon Street, from Docemo to Nnamdi Azikiwe Street, and Oke-Arin Street underwent rehabilitation.
Further works extended to Church Street, Simi Johnson Street, Iga-Idunganran and John Street. In the same vein, Aroloya Street, Breadfruit Street, Ehin-Iga, George Street and Bankole Street were rehabilitated, improving access across commercial and residential areas.
Additionally, projects covered Esi-Ogodo Street, Onikepo Street and Willoughby Street from Ita-Alaagba to Pashi Street. Rehabilitation also took place on Breadfruit Street from Lake Street to Apongbon Street and Lake Street from Griffith to Elegbata Street.
Other completed roads included Savage Street from George to Apongbon Street, Aroloya Street from Obe to Nnamdi Azikiwe Street, Ita-Alaagba from Agarawu to Akanni Street and Obe Street from Ita-Faji to Elias Street.
Works were also carried out on Iduntafa Street, stretching from Adeniji Adele Road to Onilegbale Street.
Collectively, the projects reflect a pattern of targeted interventions aimed at improving road networks while addressing drainage challenges across the Island.
The combination of road rehabilitation and culvert construction underscores an approach designed to enhance durability and reduce the impact of flooding.
At the same time, the renovation of administrative and healthcare facilities points to efforts to strengthen institutional capacity and service delivery within the local government system.
