Liverpool’s owners have no intention of selling the club – and have received no approach from Elon Musk
In a bombshell admission the tech billionaire’s father claimed his son would be interested in buying the Merseyside giants from Fenway Sports Group.
“I can’t comment on that, they’ll raise the price,” Errol Musk told when asked if Elon was looking to add the Anfield club to a portfolio which includes Tesla and social media site X. But when pressed if there was interest, Musk Senior responded: ‘Oh, yes. But that doesn’t mean he’s buying it. He would like to yes, obviously. Anybody would want to – so would I”.
The comments quickly went viral, with many debating the merits of such a takeover from the world’s richest man, who is deemed a highly controversial figure.
But Liverpool insiders have played down the prospect, with FSG understood to be uninterested in a sale and having not been subject to an approach from the 53-year-old, who was born in South Africa.
In May, the club were valued at the fourth most valuable in the world, at £4.3 billion. However, such an outlay would total to just over one per cent of Musk’s total net worth.
Musk Sr put the interest down to his family’s connection to the city. “His grandmother was born in Liverpool, and we have relatives in Liverpool, and we were fortunate to know quite a lot of the Beatles because they grew up with some of my family,” he added. “So, we are attached to Liverpool, you know”.
Despite overseeing Liverpool’s return to the summit of English football and an expansion of Anfield, FSG have been criticised by some sections of the fanbase for a perceived lack of spending on players. Last year, Liverpool posted a loss of just £9m – a drop on the ocean compared to some of its major rivals.
Musk, who is set for a senior position in Donald Trump’s new administration, has recently been a vocal critic of Sir Keir Starmer.
Elsewhere in the interview, his father said there was a ‘very good chance’ jailed far-right activist Tommy Robinson would one day become the UK’s Prime Minister.
