Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has called on the global community to remain committed to advancing healthy breastfeeding practices, describing the practice as a vital investment in the health of families and the nation at large.
The call was contained in a message issued by the First Lady on Friday, 31 July, 2026 to mark this year’s World Breastfeeding Week, observed globally from Saturday 1 August, 2026 to Friday, August 7, 2026 with the theme, “Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works.”
Tinubu noted that breastfeeding lays the foundation for a child’s healthy growth and lifelong development, stressing that its benefits extend beyond individual households to the overall wellbeing of the nation.
She therefore urged mothers across the country to embrace healthy lifestyles and eat nutritious foods, noting that doing so would not only improve their own wellbeing but also that of their children.
The First Lady’s message aligns with the global observance’s push to strengthen existing breastfeeding support systems, as this year’s theme calls on governments, health institutions and communities to reinforce practices that have already proven effective in improving maternal and child health outcomes.
