Super Eagles captain, William Toost-Ekong, and midfielder, Alex Iwobi, have called for more support for the team as Nigeria and Rwanda clash in a crucial 2026 World Cup qualifier on Saturday. The Eagles are currently languishing in the 4th position in Group C and need an outright win in this fixture against the Amavubi of Rwanda taking place at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.
Nigeria have seven points after six round f matches while Rwanda have eight points to currently occupy the second position behind group leaders, the Bafana Bafana of South Africa, with 13 points.
Troost-Ekong has charged the teeming fans in Uyo to come out in numbers to support the team on Saturday.
“As players, we are working really hard to make the fans happy on Saturday and I want them to come out and support us at the Stadium, those who are not in Uyo can also join us in prayers to bag the tree points and move on to our next challenge in South Africa,” Troost-Ekong said.
For Iwobi, he believes Nigerians are passionate about the game and they should support Eagles all the way.
“I am aware Nigerians love this game and the best way to show it is to continue to support us. We want to will always and the two matches before us are very important for us and the country.
“Our plan is to win all our remaining game but that starts on Saturday. The fans should make it easier for us with their support and prayers and I am optimistic, all will be well,” Iwobi said.
Nigeria must not drop one point in the remaining four games to stand a chance of picking an automatic ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals.
South Africa will also have to drop points in the series to give Eagles a chance of picking the sole ticket in Group C.
This is because Nigeria only has one win, four draws and one defeat so far and with seven points out of possible 18, the country is on a cliff hanger to feature at the World Cup finals holding in Mexico, Canada and the United States of America.
