Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, on Friday, 24 May, 2024, against court order, reinstated Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi as 16th Emir of Kano.
Recall that Federal High Court sitting in Kano presided over by Justice A.M. Liman granted an ex-parte order stopping Governor Yusuf from reinstating Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II pending the determination of a substantive suit filed against the reinstatement.
The order also kicked against the abolishment of four emirates: Bichi, Gaya, Karaye, and Rano.
Recall that the reinstatement was consequent upon a bill earlier passed by the State House of Assembly on Thursday, 23 May, 2024
The court, however, directed all parties involved to maintain status quo ante pending the determination of the suit filed by Sarkin Dawaki Babba and Aminu Babba-Dan’Agundi on Thursday.
The Emir, it was gathered, arrived at Kano late on the night of Thursday, 23 May, 2023, and a lowkey homecoming reception was organised for him after security advice.
It was gathered that reinstated Sanusi, arrived at the Kano Government House on Friday, 24 May, 2024 and picked up his appointment and resume work as the sole first-class Emir of the state.
Presenting the letter on Friday, 24 May, 2024, the governor said, “We return Sanusi out of conviction that he was victimized in 2019.
“We also return him as the rightful Emir of Kano, to continue the good job he was doing for the good of Kano People.”
This latest development points that all is now set for the much anticipated event that will usher the Emir to his first outing in the public since his reinstatement.
The Emir was reinstated after Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf had signed the new emirate council law which removed emirs of Kano, Bichi, Rano, Gaya and Karaye, on Thursday, 23 May, 2024.
Before the dethronement, Ganduje had split Kano emirate into five – Kano, Bichi, Rano, Gaya and Karaye.
The law which the former governor used to remove Sanusi was, however, repealed by Kano House of Assembly on Thursday, 23 May, 2024.
Sanusi was dethroned in 2020 by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje after a personal rift.
