Operatives of the Abia State Police Command have arrested four persons over alleged conspiracy, child stealing and trafficking, just as they also rescued a four-day-old baby and the baby’s mentally unstable mother, reports thegazellenews.com.
The Abia State State Police Command Public Relations Officer, DSP Mauren Chinaka, who made this disclosure through a statement on Monday, 21 September, 2026, gave the names of the arrested suspects as Gladys Nathaniel, Victor Udochukwu, Chijioke Obunwa and Onyeonoro Chinwe.
According to Chinaka, officers of the Violent Crimes Response Unit, VCRU, Rapid Response Unit, RRU, Obehie, arrested the suspects on September 16, 2026, for conspiracy, child stealing and trafficking.
The state police image-maker added that the suspects allegedly conspired to steal the four-day-old baby from her mentally unstable mother and subsequently sold the infant to another person, adding that the suspects were apprehended following a diligent investigation by the Police.
“The baby and mother were rescued. The mother has been released to her family for proper care and medical attention, while the infant has been handed over to the Ministry of Women Affairs for protective custody,” Chinaka said.
The state police publicist, who confirmed that the suspects are currently in Police custody, noted that investigation is ongoing at the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, after which they would be charged to court upon the conclusion of the investigation.
