The Chairman of Apapa Iganmu Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Hon. Jimoh Olawale Saliu, has ordered the sealing of Aratumi Shopping Plaza and Ilorin Motor Garage in the Sari area of the council for failing to participate in the monthly environmental sanitation exercise.
The council Chairman also directed the immediate removal of shops erected on the culverts along Olaitan Street, warning that structures that are not removed risk demolition.
Jimoh issued the directives on Saturday while monitoring the monthly environmental sanitation exercise across various wards of the council.
Expressing displeasure over the poor attitude of some residents and business owners towards the exercise, the chairman stressed the importance of regular environmental sanitation in maintaining a healthy and safe environment.
Addressing residents of Olaitan Street, Jimoh said the removal of structures on the culverts would allow the council to commence the construction of the street and installation of streetlights projects scheduled to begin soon.
He also urged residents to properly bag refuse and waste removed from gutters and deposit them at designated collection points for evacuation by Private Sector Participation (PSP) waste management trucks.
At Ireti-Owoseni Street in Badia, the Chairman inspected the ongoing road construction and warned youths against obstructing the contractors. He said anyone found interfering with the project would face the consequences of the law.
The council helmsman later visited the Marine Beach area, where the council’s Vice Chairman, Chief Mrs. Fadekemi Otitonaye, and other political appointees participated in the sanitation exercise.
To ensure broad participation, the chairman had earlier directed all councillors and political appointees to join the exercise in their respective wards.
Speaking with journalists after the exercise, Jimoh commended residents for their level of compliance, but called for greater participation, stressing that the council could not afford to allow poor environmental practices to create conditions for epidemics.
He urged residents to make environmental sanitation a collective responsibility and consistently support the council’s efforts to maintain a clean and healthy environment.
The Chairman was accompanied during the exercise by the Secretary to the Local Government, Hon. Ahmed Olanrewaju; Chief of Staff, Hon. Olanrewaju Fatai; Supervisor for Environment, Hon. Femi Otunla; Chief Security Adviser, Hon. Adeleke Oloriaje; Special Adviser, Hon. Adamson Omobolaji; Council Manager, Mr. Lateef Omokayode Badmus; and environmental sanitation officers.
