The Senator representing Lagos Central Senatorial District at the Red Chambers of the National Assembly, Senator Wasiu Eshilokun-Sanni has expressed concern on the danger ocean surge and encroachment portends for residents of Eti Osa and Lekki communities, reports thegazellenews.com.
Moving forward therefore, the lawmaker, who is also the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Marine Transport, assured residents of the affected communities that the Senate will be adequately informed on this problem noting that the issue will be top priority when the Red Chamber resumes sitting next month.
Speaking at the meeting on Ocean Encroachment organized by the Lekki Estates Residents and Stakeholders Association (LERSA), Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF), community leaders and traditional rulers in Eti Osa East LCDA, Senator Eshinlokun Sanni maintained that ocean encroachment is a serious threat to human existence in that area; a menace, he said must be tackled with all seriousness.
He informed the gathering of the motion he has moved in respect of the problem as well as enlisting same in the compilation of similar issues across the country by the Senate since assuming office.
The Director General of NCF, in his presentation, stated that over 180 metres of habitable land had been encroached in just four years, with a projection that 50 more would have been gone by 2024; while predicting that it would have claimed all land between it and the Lekki Epe expressway in not distant a future, if nothing is done to arrest it.
Mr Desmond Majekodunmi, a renowned Environmental activist, also contributed technically and historically to discussions on the menace posed by the surge.
At the end the meeting, NCF and LERSA infrastructure committees were mandated to come up with technically feasible solutions, for review and possible implementation.
