Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has described the posthumous Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award given to Afrobeat icon, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, as a clear affirmation of his enduring legacy and global relevance.
Sani made the assertion in a post on his verified X handle, @ShehuSani, where he reflected on the significance of the honour, noting that only a few artists attain such recognition.
According to him, the award underscores Fela’s lasting influence in music, activism and cultural expression.
“Not every great artist or entertainer would be so honored to receive the lifetime achievement award; Fela’s Grammy is both a statement and a testament to his immortality and the indomitable spirit of his music, artistry and struggles,” he wrote.
The former lawmaker recalled Fela’s personal support for political detainees during Nigeria’s era of military repression.
He said the late musician stood in solidarity with inmates, including himself, during their incarceration at Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison.
“During our years in Kirikiri Prison with his late brother, Dr Beko Kuti, he sent us words of encouragement and support,” Sani stated.
Furthermore, he noted that Fela was deeply admired by prisoners, who regarded him as a symbol of defiance against oppression. “Prisoners were fond of him as their ‘landlord’,” he added.
Sani described Fela as unmatched in his profession, stressing that his impact remains undiminished years after his death. “He was the greatest in his field,” he said.
