Veteran gospel singer, Asu Ekiye, popularly known as the Prince of the Niger Delta, has announced separation from his wife of 28 years, Kunemofa Asu, disclosing that the marriage had effectively ended in 2025.
Ekiye made this known in a public notice shared on Facebook on Thursday, 20 August, 2026 where he explained that he had deliberately chosen to delay the announcement in order to gain clarity and perspective on the development.
In the notice, the singer stated that after 28 years of a deeply personal journey of growth, experience and reflection, he wished to announce, with a profound sense of sobriety and quiet resignation, that his marriage to Kunemofa Asu had come to an end.
“Some chapters, however significant and memorable, eventually come to an end. I choose to close this chapter with grace, gratitude and dignity, while looking ahead to the possibilities of a new season,” he said.
He clarified that the marriage had ended a year earlier, but explained that he had deliberately chosen to make the announcement only at this time, after allowing himself sufficient time to process the transition.
“For the avoidance of doubt, this marriage ended a year ago. I have deliberately chosen to make this announcement only now, after allowing time to bring the perspective, clarity and quiet acceptance that such a deeply personal transition deserves,” he stated.
Recall that in a 2018 interview, Ekiye had disclosed that he proposed to his wife on the street, adding that the couple never dated in the conventional sense before getting married. He had also praised her character at the time, describing her as a “true companion.”
The singer, who was appointed Ijaw language Ambassador by Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, is yet to disclose further details regarding the circumstances surrounding the end of the marriage.
