The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to support the ninth edition of the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) 2026, highlighting the event’s importance to the creative economy, cultural diplomacy and the global promotion of African talent.

The pledge was made on Wednesday, 7 January, 2026, in Ikeja by the state Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs Toke Benson-Awoyinka, during a press conference at the Alausa Press Centre.

She explained that the briefing was organised to formally announce updates on the awards and to clearly outline Lagos State’s role as host of the continental event.

While addressing journalists and other stakeholders, the commissioner described AFRIMA as a flagship platform that celebrates Africa’s rich musical heritage, creativity and global influence.

She noted that over the years, the awards have grown into one of the continent’s most influential platforms for recognising musical excellence, while also fostering cross-cultural collaboration and promoting Africa’s creative economy on the global stage.

Furthermore, Benson-Awoyinka said the Lagos State Government remains firmly committed to initiatives that place culture at the centre of development.

She added that the state is proud to continue supporting platforms that elevate African talent and position culture as a key driver of economic and social growth.

In addition, she acknowledged the contributions of key partners supporting the awards, including international collaborators, with particular recognition given to the British High Commission for its sustained collaboration and commitment to cultural exchange and creative diplomacy.

According to the commissioner, AFRIMA 2026 is expected to attract a broad range of participants from across Africa and beyond.

She said the event will bring together artists, producers, industry leaders, policymakers and creative entrepreneurs, while also highlighting the creative sector’s contribution to employment generation, tourism development and youth empowerment.
