Following the rehabilitation of its access road and the opening of additional waste disposal platforms, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) on Wednesday, 5 August, 2026 disclosed that its operations at the Olusosun Disposal Facility have increased by more than 76 per cent.
The authority, which made this disclosure in a statement on Wednesday, said that it evacuated over 18,660 metric tonnes of municipal solid waste across its disposal facilities within one week.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, made this known during an operations review meeting held at the authority’s headquarters in Ijora-Olopa on Wednesday, 5 August, 2026.
He said the authority recorded 1,866 truck trips across its disposal facilities between July 28 and August 3, 2026, describing the performance as evidence of the impact of strategic investment in waste management infrastructure.
According to Gbadegesin, the Olusosun Disposal Facility alone recorded 1,012 truck trips during the period, compared to 574 truck trips in the previous seven days, representing an increase of 438 truck trips, or more than 76 per cent in operational capacity.
The LAWMA boss explained further that the rehabilitation of the Olusosun access road and the creation of additional waste disposal platforms have improved access to the facility, reduced truck waiting time, increased turnaround time, and strengthened waste evacuation across Lagos.
He added that the improved performance reflects the impact of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s continued investment in critical waste management infrastructure, adding that the intervention had addressed operational challenges that previously slowed waste evacuation, especially during the peak of the rainy season.
Gbadegesin also disclosed that the authority recorded its highest daily performance on August 1, when 349 truck trips, representing an estimated 3,490 metric tonnes of waste, were processed across the various disposal facilities.
He also added that the Ewu-Elepe, Badagry and Oke-Osho disposal facilities, alongside the Waste-to-Wealth Material Recovery Facility (WAEMRF) at Igando, continued to support operations at Olusosun, ensuring efficient waste evacuation across different parts of the state.
“The steady improvement in our operational figures confirms that investment in critical infrastructure produces measurable results. We are witnessing faster truck turnaround, improved access to disposal facilities, and increased waste evacuation capacity, all of which are translating into better service delivery for Lagos residents,” he said.
Gbadegesin said the authority would build on the progress through the ongoing construction of modern Transfer Loading Stations, expansion of waste recovery infrastructure, development of waste-to-energy projects, and the planned acquisition of additional compactor trucks to improve waste collection and disposal logistics across the state.
He reaffirmed LAWMA’s commitment to supporting the Lagos State Government’s vision of moving from a landfill-dependent waste management system to an integrated and sustainable model driven by resource recovery, recycling, circular economy principles, and modern waste processing infrastructure.
