President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday, 23 October, 2025 sworn in Professor Joash Amupitan (SAN) as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Amupitan was sworn in after taking the oath of office at the Council Chambers on Thursday, 23 October, 2025.
During the swearing-in, Professor Amupitan pledged to discharge his duties in accordance with the law and to exercise the authority vested in him responsibly.
President Tinubu congratulated the new INEC Chairman, expressing confidence in his ability to deliver.
“Approach your responsibilities with the highest level of integrity and patriotism,” Tinubu said, just as he also emphasized that while the electoral process is a vital part of democracy, it must remain free, fair, and credible.
“To maintain trust in elections, electoral integrity must be protected,” Tinubu charged the INEC Chairman.
He further urged Professor Amupitan to strengthen the institutional capacity of INEC.
Thegazellenews.com recalled that the Senate, on Thursday, 16 October, 2025, confirmed Professor Joash Amupitan (SAN) as the new Chairman of INEC, following his approval by the National Council of State.
Amupitan was confirmed at a plenary session presided over by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
The Upper Chamber approved his confirmation after several hours of screening by lawmakers, during which he responded to various questions.
Following his confirmation, Amupitan — who serves as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) at the University of Jos — pledged to work with relevant agencies, including the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), to improve Nigeria’s electoral process
