Senator Shehu Sani has questioned why international election monitors do not observe and publish reports on elections held in the United States, wondering whether it is only African elections that should be subjected to such scrutiny.
Sani raised the question in a post on his official X handle, @ShehuSani, on Thursday, 10 September, 2026, a post that had generated over 955 comments, 236 reposts and 740 likes as of the time of filing this report.
“I have never heard of International election monitors monitoring elections in the US, and making public their reports on the credibility and transparency of the elections; or is it only African elections that should be monitored?” he asked.
Reacting to the post, an X user, Edcrib, pushed back at the senator, arguing that African countries continue to require election monitoring because of persistent governance failures on the continent.
“Until you grow up and stop being the third world of third world countries, you must be monitored else you cannibals will devour anything that challenges your greed and impunity,” the user wrote.
Another user, identified as FemiO, sided with the senator, citing a recent pledge by United States President Donald Trump to give every American adult $5,000 if the Republican Party wins the midterm elections, an offer the user described as legally questionable since the promised funds were not being disbursed before the elections.
“You are right senator. Trump just promised to give every adult America $5,000 if Republicans wins mid-term elections. He is doing a wrong thing legally since the money is not being given before the elections. He is trying to avoid impeachment number 3 by Democrats,” the user wrote.
A third user, Ben Marke, drew a related comparison, questioning why American presidents do not travel abroad for medical treatment, unlike some African leaders.
“I have never seen a US president travelling to Europe or Africa for medical treatments, or is it only on African leaders that travel abroad for treatment?” the user wrote.
