Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Burna Boy was briefly held by customs officials at a Moroccan airport over an issue related to his jewellery while arriving ahead of his scheduled performance at the Africa Cup of Nations fan activities, the President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, has revealed.
Speaking during a recent press conference, Motsepe explained that the incident occurred when the artiste arrived in Morocco to headline the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations Fan Zone concert in Rabat.
According to him, customs officers stopped Burna Boy after noticing the heavy gold jewellery he was wearing, prompting concerns that required clarification.
However, Motsepe said the situation was swiftly addressed after he personally intervened to prevent any delay to the singer’s engagement. He reported that the matter was resolved amicably following discussions with the relevant authorities.
“Recently, I was called to intervene because Burna Boy was stopped at the airport after customs officers noticed his heavy and beautiful gold jewellery,” Motsepe said, adding that his involvement ensured a smooth outcome.
Subsequently, Burna Boy went on to honour his commitment, headlining the AFCON Fan Zone concert in Rabat on Friday 16 January, 2026.
Meanwhile, the event also featured performances by Ghanaian singer Stonebwoy, as well as Moroccan artistes Stormy and Jaylann.
Overall, the concert formed part of a wider programme of cultural and entertainment activities organised alongside the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, aimed at enriching the tournament experience for football fans across the continent.
