In qualifying for the knock-out stage of the ongoing FIFA Women World Cup taking place in New Zealand and Australia, the Super Falcons have created three new records, reports thegazellenews.com.

The Falcons played a goalless draw with the Republic of Ireland in Melbourne on Monday, 31 July, 2023, to qualify for the Round of 16 of the competition.

With the five points they have over three matches, the Falcons qualified in second place behind co-hosts, Australia who beat Olympic Champions, Canada 4-0 and garnered six points to qualified in first place.

In keeping another clean sheet against the Irish, and in addition to the one they kept earlier against Canada, the Falcons thus became the first African side to keep two clean sheets at a FIFA Women World Cup.

In avoiding defeat in Monday’s game, the Falcons have also created another record, being the first time they would go through the group stage without defeat and in essence becoming the first African Women National Team to achieve such feat.

After Monday’s match, the Super Falcons have conceded just two goals in three matches and those were the goals conceded in the 3-2 victory over co-hosts Australia. In doing this, another African milestone was created. The Falcons became the African side with least number of goals conceded at the group stage

As it stands, only Morocco can equal the second record of two clean sheets at a FIFA Women World Cup while the remaining two records will stand till at least the next FIFA Women World Cup in 2027.
