The Executive Chairman of Alimosho Local Government, Hon. Akinpelu Ibrahim Johnson, has charged security stakeholders to intensify their efforts towards ensuring a safer and more sanitised community. He made this call during the first Peace and Security Meeting of 2026, held at his office.
According to the Chairman, it is imperative for residents to know their neighbours, particularly non-Nigerians who parade themselves as northerners. He noted that individuals from countries such as Chad, Senegal, Mali and Niger are present in some communities and that failure to properly document them poses serious security risks. He therefore appealed to immigration officers to assist in profiling and documenting such persons.
He further stressed the need to sustain the fight against hard drugs across the local government, describing drug abuse as a growing menace that has led to loss of lives and the mental derailment of many youths. While commending the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for its efforts so far, he urged the agency to intensify its operations to curb the scourge.
Giving updates on their operations, the Alimosho Immigration Commandant, Mr. Omoniyi Mayowa, disclosed that his officers were currently visiting communities where northerners are in the majority to identify non-Nigerians among them. He stated that community leaders in such areas had assured them of maximum cooperation in taking inventory of foreign nationals. According to him, proper documentation would assist security agencies in establishing identities and tracking criminal activities where necessary.
The NDLEA, on its part, promised to intensify operations across identified black spots in Alimosho in order to apprehend drug peddlers. “By mid-March, you will see a new Alimosho,” said Mr. Adebowale Adebote.
Area ‘M’ Commandant, Mrs. Tokunbo Abanikande, urged members of the committee to demonstrate greater commitment to the task ahead. She identified 311 Road in Gowon Estate as a major hub of drug peddling and called for focused attention on the area. She also charged hoteliers to maintain proper lodging records to ensure that full details of their guests are captured, noting that many criminal activities are often planned in hotels.
She further advised residents to desist from jungle justice, describing it as a criminal act.She warned that investigations had shown that crimes involving commercial motorcyclists (okada riders) are more prevalent at night. Consequently, she announced that security agencies would clamp down on night operations by okada riders and advised residents to avoid using motorcycles at night due to the risks involved.
The meeting concluded with a resolution that religious leaders should use their pulpits to preach against drug abuse and jungle justice. Clerics were also urged to educate their congregations on the importance of the ongoing rubella and measles vaccination exercise, encouraging parents to allow their children to be vaccinated despite prevailing misconceptions.
