Afrobeats star, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has hinted at a possible retirement from music, stating that he does not intend to remain in the spotlight at 40 years while competing with artistes in their 20s.
The singer made this disclosure during an appearance on “The Uncut Podcast,” where he explained that music remained central to his identity, but stressed that he would not continue performing alongside younger artistes once he clocked 40.
He drew a comparison with American rapper Jay-Z, noting that the veteran musician had taken a break from the industry and was still thriving in his other ventures.
“Music is my blood but I’m not going to be 40 still dragging with guys in their 20s. Jay-Z took a break and he is doing his thing,” he said.
Davido, however, clarified that his comments should not be interpreted as a call for established musicians to quit the industry entirely.
The singer further stated that he could step away from music for an extended period and still return to massive success on account of his established catalogue.
“I can take a 10yrs break and still do a 50-arena tour. I have the catalogue. I might decide not to make another song for the rest of my life, and nobody is touching my catalogue,” he stated.
The 33-year-old also stated that music should serve as a platform for artistes to explore opportunities beyond performing and recording.
“All I am saying is there are other things music should be able to help you branch out into,” Davido added.
