The Senator representing Bauchi Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Abdul Ahmed Ningi, has called on Nigerians to stand firm in protecting democratic values and institutions, stressing that the responsibility for sustaining democracy rests not only with elected officials but also with citizens.
Abdul Ahmed Ningi made the call in his felicitations with Nigerians on Thursday, particularly the people of Bauchi State and his constituents, on the occasion of Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary, in a statement he made available to Journalists on Thursday.
He further urged citizens to remain steadfast in defending democracy and promoting peace, unity and responsible participation in the electoral process.
According to him, “October 1 Independence anniversary date provides an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the country’s journey since independence, its democratic progress and the challenges that continue to confront the nation.”
The Senator urged Nigerians, particularly his constituents, to approach the forthcoming elections with a strong sense of civic responsibility, calling for peaceful conduct, respect for the rule of law and tolerance of political differences.
He stressed the importance of ensuring that elections are conducted in an atmosphere free from violence, intimidation and other practices capable of undermining the credibility of the democratic process.
According to him, political disagreements should not be allowed to destroy the bonds of unity and brotherhood that bind Nigerians together.
Abdul Ahmed Ningi also reaffirmed his commitment to building on the goals and aspirations he has established in public service, saying he remains determined to contribute meaningfully to the development and wellbeing of his people.
He stated that effective representation goes beyond political contests, stressing the need to create opportunities, support development initiatives and ensure that citizens have a stronger voice in governance.
The Senator urged his constituents to remain united and focused on issues that directly affect their lives, including security, education, economic opportunities, infrastructure and social welfare.
He also appealed to political leaders and their supporters across the country to place the national interest above personal and partisan considerations, particularly as Nigeria approaches another electoral cycle.
Abdul Ahmed Ningi who is a chieftain of the ADC, stated that Nigerians must collectively protect the democratic space by participating actively in elections, holding public officials accountable and demanding transparency from political institutions.
He encouraged young Nigerians in particular to see democracy as an avenue for peaceful change and civic participation rather than a source of conflict.
The Senator expressed optimism that the country can overcome its challenges through responsible leadership, active citizenship, national unity and respect for democratic principles.
He extended his goodwill to Nigerians at home and abroad, wishing the nation continued peace, progress, unity and prosperity.
“Our democracy is a collective responsibility. We must protect it, participate in it and ensure that our electoral processes remain peaceful, credible and reflective of the will of the people,” Abdul Ahmed Ningi concluded.
