President Bola Tinubu has congratulated former military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd), on his 85th birthday, describing him as an elder statesman whose leadership left an enduring mark on Nigeria.
The President’s message was contained in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Sunday, 16 August , 2026, in which Tinubu praised Babangida’s military career and his leadership of the country following the 1985 coup.
Tinubu said Babangida’s eight-year administration had a lasting impact on Nigeria’s political, economic and geographical development, noting that whether liked or not, the former President impacted Nigeria in ways no other leader has, with his reign leaving enduring marks on the country’s political, economic and geographic landscape.
He credited the former military leader with expanding the Nigerian economy, developing infrastructure and establishing agencies and institutions that continue to contribute to national development.
Tinubu also commended Babangida’s role in the creation of states, explaining that his foresight, wisdom, and sense of equity and fairness helped shape Nigeria’s current political structure, adding that these contributions had secured him an indelible place in the country’s history.
He disclosed that even in retirement, living a quiet life at his Minna Hilltop residence in Niger State, Babangida continues to offer valuable counsel and guidance to the nation, describing his advice as an inspiration to younger generations.
Tinubu concluded by wishing Babangida continued grace, good health, renewed strength and many more years, praying that Almighty Allah keeps him with the nation for years to come.
