The United Kingdom has appointed seasoned diplomat Vicky Seymour as its new Deputy High Commissioner in Abuja, reinforcing Britain’s diplomatic engagement with Nigeria at a time both countries are seeking deeper cooperation on trade, security, migration and economic development.

Seymour, who has officially assumed office, succeeds Gill Lever OBE, whose posting ended in June 2026. Her appointment comes as the UK continues to strengthen its strategic partnership with Nigeria, one of Africa’s largest economies and Britain’s key partner on issues ranging from regional security and investment to climate action and international development.

In her new role, Seymour will work to advance collaboration between the two countries across economic growth, security, migration, development, international cooperation and people-to-people ties.

With more than 20 years of experience in diplomacy, international development and public service, Seymour brings extensive expertise to the position. Before her appointment to Abuja, she headed the East Africa Department at the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), a role she had held since 2023.

She previously led the FCDO’s Trade Diplomacy Department and served as Development Director in Mozambique, where she oversaw development programmes and strengthened bilateral engagement. Her diplomatic career also includes senior assignments in Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Afghanistan, alongside responsibilities covering climate policy, security and economic development.

Before joining the UK civil service, Seymour worked in the non-profit sector, focusing on migration issues.

Speaking on her appointment, Seymour expressed enthusiasm about beginning her assignment in Nigeria.

“I am delighted to be taking up the role of Deputy High Commissioner in Abuja. I look forward to getting to know this extraordinary country, meeting people from across Nigeria’s diverse communities, and building on the strong partnership that already exists between our two countries,” she said.

She added that she hoped both countries would continue creating opportunities for greater collaboration and stronger people-to-people connections in the years ahead.

The appointment reflects the UK’s continued commitment to deepening its long-standing relationship with Nigeria. The two countries maintain extensive cooperation in areas including defence and security, trade and investment, healthcare, education, governance reforms, anti-corruption efforts and climate resilience.

Nigeria remains one of the UK’s most important partners in Africa, with bilateral trade worth billions of pounds annually and a large Nigerian diaspora contributing significantly to social, economic and cultural links between both nations.

Seymour’s extensive experience in African diplomacy and development is expected to further enhance bilateral engagement as London and Abuja pursue shared priorities aimed at promoting prosperity, stability and sustainable development.
