The World Bank has disclosed it disbursed a total sum of $45.5 million to Nigeria under the Identity for Development project by the country’s National Identity Management Commission (NIM).

The World Bank, which made this disclosure in a recent implementation report, added that the project which kicked off in 2021 is aimed at increasing National Identification Number, NIN enrolment for Nigerians costs $430 million.

The figure released so far is 10.5 percent of the total $430 million.

Consequently, NIMC announced in April 2024 that NIN enrolment increased to 107.3 million far from the 148 million enrollees target in June 2024.

The development comes amid concerns that citizens’ data are allegedly being sold at a price.

However, at the weekend, NIMC dismissed the report of a data breach.
