Nigerian music superstar Davido has revealed that his globally recognised stage name was created by his father during his childhood, tracing the nickname to moments when he was being stubborn as a boy.

The award-winning singer, whose real name is David Adeleke, shared the story in a recent disclosure that quickly gained attention online.

According to him, the name emerged from the manner his father called out to him whenever he wanted to correct or summon him, thereby turning a family expression into a brand that would later become famous across the world.

“My dad gave me the name Davido. I was very stubborn as a kid, so whenever he wanted to call me, he’d shout ‘David-o! Davido-o!’ That’s how the name stuck,” he said.

Consequently, the revelation amused many fans on social media, with several followers describing the backstory as relatable, humorous and distinctly Nigerian.

Others noted how an ordinary household nickname eventually evolved into one of the most recognisable names in African entertainment.

Davido has grown from a young talent into one of the continent’s biggest music exports, building a successful career marked by hit songs, sold-out concerts and international collaborations.

Over the years, the name “Davido” has become synonymous with Afrobeats success and global pop influence.

Furthermore, admirers observed that the story reflects the personal and family-rooted origins behind many famous stage names, especially in Nigeria, where nicknames often emerge from everyday interactions and later take on wider cultural significance.

What began as a father’s loud call to a stubborn child has transformed into a powerful entertainment identity now recognised far beyond Nigeria’s borders.
