The Lagos State Government has appointed His Royal Majesty, Oba (Dr) Olufolarin Olukayode Ogunsanwo, the Alara of Ilara, as the 6th Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), signalling a transition in the ceremonial leadership of the institution.

The appointment, announced by the Governor of Lagos State and Visitor to the University, Mr Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, takes effect from Friday, 13 February 2026. It follows the completion of the tenure of Professor Gbolahan Elias, SAN, who served as the 5th Chancellor of the University.
According to an official statement issued by the Registrar and Secretary to Council, Mr Emmanuel A. Fanu, the appointment was made pursuant to the Lagos State University Law 2004 (as amended), Chapter L69, Volume 7, Schedule 1, which empowers the Visitor to appoint the Chancellor. Oba Ogunsanwo is to serve a single term of five years, renewable once.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Government and the University community acknowledged the contributions of the outgoing Chancellor, Professor Elias, describing his tenure as meritorious and marked by dignity. The statement noted that he represented the University with distinction throughout his period in office.
Furthermore, the Pro-Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor, on behalf of the Governing Council, Senate, staff and students, congratulated Oba Ogunsanwo on his appointment. They described the development as a distinguished honour and expressed optimism that his tenure would advance the University’s vision and mission.
They also reaffirmed the commitment of the University community to supporting the new Chancellor, emphasising the importance of collaborative leadership in sustaining institutional growth and stability.
In addition, stakeholders within the University expressed confidence that Oba Ogunsanwo’s wealth of experience as a traditional ruler and professional would positively impact the institution’s strategic direction, particularly in strengthening its academic standing and public engagement.
